オリンピックの正式種目に登録されてから、さらに注目を集めているスケートボード。最近の渋谷は、右も左もスケーターであふれているし、スケートパークでもかなりの混雑を見せる。しかし、同じストリートスポーツのBMXには、あまり大きな影響はなさそうだ。スケートよりも大きなセクションで、迫力のあるパフォーマンスが魅力的なBMX。しかし、新しい趣味として始めるには、多額の出費だったり、女性ライダーが少なかったりと手を出しづらいイメージが強い。BMXがより周知されるには、まだもう少し時間がかかりそうだ。その反面、現在増え続けるスケーターは、BMXライダーの目には果たしてどう映っているのか。
Skateboarding is a big trend in Japan since it has become a new Olympic sport. You’ll see skaters everywhere in the streets and at skate parks too. But it seems like the popularity of skating doesn’t have a huge effect on the street sport, BMX. It’s famous for more powerful performances with bigger sections, compared to skating. Buying a BMX isn’t so cheap, and most of the riders are men. For those reasons, it’s not an easy sport to get started. What do BMX riders think about the growth of the skate community in Japan?
今回は、BMXライダーの兄とスケーターの弟、RaioさんとRakuさんに、BMXとスケートの似ている部分や、違う部分について話を聞いた。
For this article, a BMX rider, Raio, and his brother who skates, Raku talked about some similarities/differences between BMX and skating.
渋谷、原宿にあるBMXとスケートを取り扱うショップ、Arktzで働いている21歳のRaioさんと、19歳のRakuさん。小学生時代は、2人ともサッカー少年だったという。兄のRaioさんは中学校に入学する頃、モトクロスのオフトレーニングとしてマウンテンバイクに乗っていた友達に憧れて、まだ価格の優しいBMXを買ってもらったと言う。それと同時に弟のRakuさんも一緒にはじめ、2人でゴリラ公園と呼ばれるパークに1時間半かけて自走で通っていた。しばらくしてからRakuさんは、ヘルメットなどの荷物を持って、遠いパークに行くのが憂鬱になって辞めた。RaioさんもレースのBMXは自分のやりたいことではなかったため、ムラサキパークに通い始めることに。パークで働いていたBMXライダーがArktzでも働いていたため、そこでパーク用のBMXを買った。それから本格的にストリートとして乗りはじめ、ハマっていく。旧宮下公園前にあったウンコカーブに集まってはじまるジャムには中学3年生の時から参加しており、若さと勢いで周りの大人たちを驚愕していた。
Raio, 21 years old and Raku, 19 years old work at BMX/skate shops named Arktz, which are located in Shibuya and Harajuku. In their childhoods, they were both soccer players. Raio became interested in BMX influenced by his friend who rode motocross and a mountain bike for off-season training. At the same time, Raku also started riding BMX, and the brothers often went to the Gorilla park to practice racing; it took an hour and half by bike to get there, plus they had to carry their protectors and helmets. Though Raku quit BMX, Raio continued riding. BMX racing wasn’t something Raio wanted to do so he started going to Murasaki park. And he met a guy who worked at the park and Arktz at the time, and he helped Raio pick his new BMX for street riding. Raio rode more, not only at the park. Eventually he started going to jam sessions in Shibuya with adults at the age of 16.
一方BMXへの興味がなくなって以降のRakuさんは、父がずっと持っていたクルーザーをきっかけに、Christian HosoiモデルのPennyを買ってもらって滑っていた。そして中学1年生の時に本物のスケートのかっこよさに気づく。スケートボードが欲しいと父にお願いしたその日中に、渋谷にあったボーダーズファクトリーで手に入れたと話す。決して安いとは言い切れないBMXとスケートボードだが、RaioさんとRakuさんは、迅速な対応をした父に関して「元々サーファーだったから、ずっと自分たち子供に横乗りスポーツをやってほしかったんだと思う。」と笑いながら言った。Rakuさんは、はじめて1ヶ月は家の前でオーリーをひたすら練習し、Raioさんとムラサキパークに通っていた。そして中学3年生頃から駒沢公園などの他のパークにも行き始めたそう。
After Raku quit BMX, he got a Penny board since he liked skating with his dad’s cruiser skateboard. At the age of 13, he wanted a “real” skateboard so he went to a skate shop with his dad on the same day he asked his dad to get him one. Their dad used to be a surfer so that he might’ve been happy about his kids starting any sort of extreme sports. For the first month, Raku practiced ollies in front of his house, then he started going to Murasaki park with Raio.
そんなRaioさんとRakuさんにBMXとスケートを比較してもらった。まずは、移動手段のラクさの違いだ。BMXはある程度の長距離自走が可能だが、電車に乗る際にカバーを着けたり、満員電車だと乗れなかったりと少し手間がかかってしまう。Raioさんは、鵠沼やうみかぜから都内までの帰り道によく「スケーターだったらいいのにな。」と思うそうだ。スケートの場合は、プッシュでの移動には限界があるが、片手で簡単に持ち運べるため、電車での移動は苦労しないことが多い。
BMX and skateboarding both have pros and cons. The first thing is about transportation. You can ride BMX from a spot to another when street riding, but it’s difficult to use public transportation. Raio says that there are moments when he wishes he was a skater, especially on the way back from parks or spots outside of Tokyo. On the other hand, it’s not as convenient to get around places by skating, but you can easily carry your board on the train, bus and airplanes.
その次にあげられたのが、人口から生まれる違いである。Raioさんは「東京はスケーターが多いから都内の友達と滑れるけど、自分の場合は一緒に乗る友達がみんな神奈川県の人たちだから毎回移動が大変。」と話していた。その他、全国のスケーターの把握は不可能なことに対して、BMXはコミュニティが狭いために多くの人が顔見知りという点も大きく違う。Raioさんは「スポット行って、チャリいるじゃんと思っても、結局お前かよ！（知り合いじゃん）ってなる（笑)」と言う。スケートのイメージでもあるクルー同士のいざこざや、スポット占領や縄張りみたいなものにも憧れるとのこと。実際にスケーターとしてRakuさんは「自分たちがスポット行った時に、誰か滑ってたけどすぐどいた（笑）」といったエピソードも教えてくれた。みんなで仲良く乗ったり、滑ったりできることは素晴らしいことだが、チームやクルーでライバル視できる存在というのも、カルチャーを発展させるための良い刺激なのかもしれない。
Another thing is about the population. “You get to choose who you want to skate with from your area, but I always need to get on the train for a long time to ride with my friends.” says Raio. And the BMX community in Japan is so small that everybody knows everybody. Raio also says that it happens to be somebody he knows when he sees any BMX rider at a street spot. There are more teams and crews in the skate community and Raio wants that for BMX too; because of those “fights” between the crews which sometimes happen when there are some skaters that are already skating at the spot. Raku responds as that has happened to him when they were skating in the street. It is nice that everyone’s friends, but having rival teams or crews might help grow the culture better.
2人で通っていたムラサキパークに行かなくなり、家での時間を共にすることが増えた。RaioさんもRakuさんも友人のビデオを撮ることが好きで、お互い撮れたBMXとスケートのクリップを見せ合ったり、スケートビデオをよく一緒に見たりすると言う。Raioさんは、技術面はBMXのビデオを見て学び、スケートビデオでファッションやスタイルのインスパイアを受けているとのこと。他のカルチャーと触れ合うことは、独自のスタイルを感化することができる。
Raio and Raku spend more time together at home since they both stopped going to Murasaki park. They love showing the BMX/skate clips of their friends to each other at the end of the day, and watching skate videos. Raio gets inspired by skater fashion and the style from the videos, and learns BMX tricks from the BMX videos. Experiencing diversity of cultures will make you grow as a person.
アパレルをはじめ、音楽制作やDJなどの活動をしているBMXライダーが、スケーターに比べて非常に少ないのは、BMXをはじめるにあたりお金がとてもかかるのが理由なのかもしれない。ストリートカルチャーに興味をもち、何か始めたいと思う人は、7万円のBMXよりも、1万円前後で買えるスケートの方が手を伸ばしやすいだろう。そのため、多くのBMXライダーたちにとって、映像やパートを残すことが大きい目的になりやすい。高いお金を払った趣味だからこそ、本気でやらなきゃと思うのだろうか。友達と”遊び”として楽しく乗り、それにスポンサーやお金がついてくるチャンスがあるのがRaioさんにとってのBMXの魅力だと語る。
It seems that there are more people in the skate community than the BMX’s, who are doing other creative things such as running apparel brands, taking photos or making music. The cost to buy a BMX in the first place. It is obvious that people that are interested in the street culture would choose skating rather than BMX. That could also be the reason why it is important to make a full part for BMX riders. There is always a chance to get sponsored by any company by riding with his friends, and that’s what Raio loves about BMX.
