This Thursday awaits a lively night at the renowned Harajuku penthouse.
Club Batata presents “FEEL BATATA” at Sankeys Penthouse on Thursday, October 27th. The music lounge and bar on the top floor of Q Plaza HARAJUKU is the perfect spot to enjoy music over drinks with the glittering night view of Tokyo in the background. A carefully selected DJ lineup will guarantee a groovy feel, and, in addition, there will be an exhibition of photographs and paintings by up-and-coming local skaters and artists.
This time, Club Batata, which has already held a multitude of parties, aims to recreate a night out at the disco. The disco is the origin of the modern club, which refers to a dance hall where music, food, and drink are served for everyone to indulge in, and it is also a genre of pop music that flourished in the 1980s. In addition to this, disco wouldn’t have been so memorable without its fancy cocktails and iconic dance moves.
In the contemporary Tokyo club scene, hip-hop, as well as techno and house music, are particularly popular. However, what organizers Renan and Kick were looking for was precisely disco: they felt that there were not enough events that they really wanted to dance at, so they decided to create such a place by themselves.
“Batata” has a curious meaning. Since the organizer, Renan, has roots in Brazil, so Kick picked up the Portuguese word for “potato”. The word “potato” may seem rather plain, but it contains a message that appeals to many because “FEEL BATATA” takes inspiration from feeling “potato-like”, which is used when describing people of the countryside. Although often given a negative meaning, here it represents authenticity and rawness, in a come-as-you-are style. Specifically, don’t try too hard to be cool, act naturally, and just enjoy yourself.
Club Batata continues to hold parties with the intention of providing a place where everyone can dance like nobody is watching, and their goal for the future is to grow as a community, not just as an event planner. They’re looking to create a space for people of all ages, in order to connect with each other, which is also the appeal of skateboarding, with which they’re heavily affiliated with.
