変わることの美しさ、変わらないことの美しさ。

どちらも含めて “多様性” であることを信じたい。

今存在しているものは、伝統文化のようにありのままの形で後継していくことができるが、今の時代にあわせて新しい形を生み出すこともできる。しかし、風のように移り変わっていく世界で生き残るには、良さを残しつつも対応していく必要があるのかもしれない。

Some people like to change their lifestyle constantly, and some people like to stick with what they already have. In today’s world, it’s harder for the latter because the world is changing so fast that you’re expected to adapt a little at least. But it’s always the best if you can keep your style.

スケーターのなかには、時代の変化を受け入れることを難しいと感じる者が多く見られる。もともと社会に中指を立てて生きてきたバックグラウンド／DNAが強く残っていることが関係しているだろう。世の中の流れには従わず、独自のルールを見つけて生きることがスケーターの魅力のひとつであった。さらに、スケートが “スポーツ” として認知する人が増えたことにより、ストリートスケートの厳しい規制も強化され続けている。それを含め、これまでのスケート独特のカルチャーや自由さを失っているのも事実だ。

There are a certain amount of skaters who seem to have a complaint about the way of skateboarding exists now in Japan. The beauty of skating is somehow lost with new perspectives of it, often seen as a sport rather than a culture. It’s making huge changes influenced by society and other events; for example, street skating is getting more and more restricted. Because skaters always have expressed themselves against what society wants them to be or do, they tend to find their own style and rules to live with. It’s harder to keep the skate culture as it is.

それでも視点を変えれば、スケートは社会の影響を受けて良い方向に変化しているとも言える。スケートパークの増設やメンテナンスによって整ったスケート環境があったり、いつでもどこでもスケート用品を買えるようになったり。今後スケート関係の仕事をしていきたい人にとって、自分で作った商品のブランド化や企業との案件など、いろいろな形のビジネスに発展しやすくなったのではないか。こうした変化のおかげで好きなことを仕事にできている人も少なくはない。

However, skateboarding has gotten a good impact as well. After the olympics, they recognized the need of skateparks so that a lot of new ones are currently under construction everywhere. Also you can buy skate gears from your favorite skate shops, either online or in store anytime. For those of you who want to have run a skateboarding business, there’re more options and chances to go success. Even if you miss the old school of skating, you should be grateful for what society has brought in.

また、わたしたちの生活に欠かせないInstagramやYoutubeなどのSNSによって、”スケートビデオ” がもつ役割も変化しただろう。これまでパートを出すことが自分の表現となり、そこからスポンサーを受けるという流れが一般的だった。スケートブランドやスケーターに認められるための方法だ。しかし現在では、スマートフォンで簡単に撮影ができるうえに、誰でも世界に発信できるという状況であり、SNS上の動画をきっかけに知名度を上げた人も多い。

SNS might’ve changed the role of skate videos as well. It used to be common for skaters to make their video part, in order to get sponsored from skate brands or some sort. But now, anybody can easily record videos on iPhone and go viral. There maybe some skaters who became famous because of the short videos they post on Instagram.

そこで今回紹介するのは、可愛らしい見た目とは裏腹に男子顔負けの滑りを魅せるSayakaさん。Instagramでは4万人近くのフォロワーをもつガールズスケーターであるが、この度初めてのパートを制作している。一見インフルエンサーとして成功している彼女にとって、パートをもつことはどういう意味を成すのか。その答えを探るため、彼女のこれまでと今後について聞いた。

We’re here to introduce a Japanese girl skater, Sayaka, who is about to have her video part soon. She has close to 40,000 followers on Instagram, and is popular all over the world for her skating. It seems like she’s successful getting the attention, but her dream is further in the different direction. What does it mean for her to appear in a skate video? For this article, she talks about how she got into skating and the future she envisions.

スケートボードとの出会い

Beginning of Skate Life

Sayakaさんは、大学3年生のときにスケートボードをはじめる。中学は吹奏楽部に、高校は市民のジャズバンドに所属してトランペットを演奏していた。大学に入ってからも続けていたが、自由時間はすべてスケートにつぎ込まれるように。某スポーツショップで働きはじめたという友達に誘われてスケートボードを購入した彼女は、一緒にはじめた友達を差し置いて、一気にスケートの虜に。ショッピングセンター付近にあったトランポリンのような床が跳ねる遊具を利用してオーリーの練習をしたところ、少し浮いたことに喜びを感じ、そこからどっぷりとハマっていった。そして、ひとりでパークに通う日々がはじまる。駒沢公園の雰囲気に魅力を感じ、やがて駒沢ローカルに。スケートの基礎は、Youtubeで自ら学んでコツコツと練習していた彼女だが、駒沢公園で滑っているときに同世代のスケーターのデッキが飛んできたことを境に、仲間を増やした。「なにを練習してるの？」からはじまった会話をきっかけに、駒沢のスケーターたちと親交を深めることに。

Sayaka started skating when she was in college. Before then, her passion was playing the trumpet for a long time. One day, one of her friends had started working at a sports shop, and she bought a skateboard there. They both started together, but Sayaka got into skating more and more. There’re a lot of people saying that going to a skate park alone as a beginner is scary, though there was never a thought like that in Sayaka’s mind: She started going to Komazawa park by herself. Youtube was a great source to learn basic tricks from, and it was no problem. But she quickly became friends with people at the skatepark. There’re many chances you can start a conversation at skateparks, even if you are new and practicing alone by the edge of a fence.

当時はスケートパークで女の子を見かけることはほとんどなかったという状況。しかし、Sayakaさんは子どもの頃から男の子の輪のなかに入って遊ぶことも多かったということで、そんなスケート環境は強みでしかなかった。”言いたいことはしっかり言う” 自分にも他人にも厳しいスケーターが多かったこともあり、スキルだけでなくメンタルもともに鍛えられてきただろう。楽しい瞬間も多かった反面、辛いこともたくさん経験してきた。一緒に滑っていた仲間の1人に「お前のつまらない人生はそのままスケートに反映されるな」と言われることも。

There were not many girl skaters back then, and that’s what made Sayaka grow as a skater in a way. Even now, girls who skate with boys seem to get better than those who don’t. She got the most out of the environment, but there were some jerks too. Now that she thinks about it, it could’ve been one of the fuels; one of her skater friends told her that her “boring” life is literally showing in her skating. Of course she’s still mad at the person.

Skateboard Changed Her Life

スケートをはじめる前は、自分に自信がなかったというSayakaさん。トランペットを演奏していた大学時代でも「自分にはなにがあるんだろう」と常に悩んでいた。それまで、すべてにおいて1番でなければいけない！という考え方にとらわれていたのだ。しかし、スケートのトリックをメイクすると自分のことのように喜んでくれる仲間のおかげで、”成長” に喜ぶことを学んだ。これまで成績で1番になることや、ピアノ演奏者としてプロになることなど “結果” を重要視していたことに比べ、ゴールや目標をもちつつも、ひとつひとつの過程に喜ぶことができるようになったと話す。こうしてだんだんと自信につながっていった。

Sayaka used to have this idea that she had to be the best at everything when she was in school. But then skateboarding changed that, because she learned that it’s okay to celebrate every time she got close to achieving goals, in this case they are skate tricks. She realized that it’s more important to enjoy the process, not the result. As she practices, she’s gained confidence in herself.

大学卒業後にアパレルの会社に就職したSayakaさんは、2年で店長にまで昇格したがすぐに仕事を辞めた。そして、これまでずっと行きたかった海外旅行にでた。これまで欧米やアジアに足を踏み入れた。そこで気づいたのは、スケートがあれば英語を話せなくても友達ができるということ。スケートをもってパークに行くだけで現地のローカルと交流することができるのだ。言葉を交わさなくても、ローカルでなくても、トリックを決めればだれかが喜んでくれる。言語以外のコミュニケーション方法で喜びや楽しみを共有することの素晴らしさに気づくこともできた。

After college, Sayaka had worked at an apparel store and gotten promoted to a store manager in 2 years. She felt that there was nothing more she could do, so she quit and traveled the world. English wasn’t her strong suit, but she was able to communicate through skating. You can still share happiness and other emotions without saying a word. That’s how she made friends everywhere.

ガールズスケーターが憧れる存在に

Becoming A Person Whom Girls Look Up To

磨きかかったスケートスキルと、女子ならではの魅力あふれるSayakaさんの滑りに魅了される方も多いのではないか。日本だけに限らず海外からも注目を集めている彼女は、これまでに多くの “ガールズイベント” に携わり、ガールズスケーターたちを盛り上げる中心的存在となっていった。2019年4月、東京・天王洲アイルに期間限定でオープンしたスケートパーク “Nike SB dojo” のスタッフだった彼女は、毎週木曜日の夜に行われた女性限定イベント “GIRLS NIGHT” も支えてきた。毎回20人ほどのガールズスケーターたちが集まり、楽しく交流できる場として大盛況だった。そんなGIRLS NIGHTは、集大成として1日規模のイベント “GIRLS SKATE FESTIVAL” にまで成長を遂げた。スケートをはじめたばかりの人や、周りにガールズスケーターの友だちがいなかった人にとっては、スケートカルチャーへの大きな入口となったであろう。

It’s a sure thing that Sayaka has impressed many people in and outside Japan by her skating skills with the style. Moreover, she has occasionally contributed to the girl’s skate community in Japan as well. She became a part of Nike SB dojo team in 2019, and worked as a staff at the first skatepark owned by Nike SB. “GIRLS NIGHT” was a weekly event where only girls and trans people could come and skate during the set up time. The event was successful every week and eventually led to a one day event called “GIRLS SKATE FESTIVAL”. During the time when more and more girls started skating, those events helped expand the girl’s skate scene.

On The Way To Make Dreams Come True

こうしてスケートライフ突入から9年目にして、Sayakaさんがずっと叶えたかった夢のひとつである、初パートをLesque Skateboardsから制作することになった。ライダーのRyo MotohashiさんやKenya Okunoさんが出るビデオには、明るくスマートな雰囲気があるのと、”ウェルカム（最初の）” パートということもあり、Sayakaさんの希望で日中の撮影のみで作成する映像となるようだ。ストリートスケートに対して厳しくなる一方の東京や関東エリアで、夜のカットは使用しないという強いこだわりで挑む。

Finally Sayaka is taking a step forward to one of her dreams; making a skate part, at 9th year of skate life. A domestic deck company, Lesque Skateboards has supported her through it. For this video, she is committed to only using the clips she got during the day for two reasons: One is that it’s a “Welcome” part and it should be bright as the beginning of starting something new. Another is that the riders of Lesque, Ryo Motohashi and Kenya Okuno both express lightness and smartness through skating. It’s challenging because it’s getting harder and harder to skate in the street, especially in a city like Tokyo. Street skating at night is a way to escape from the cops or security guards. 

これまでに数々のスポンサーや、多くのInstagramのフォロワーを手に入れてきたSayaykaさんはなぜ、このパート作りに励んでいるのか。それはやはり「スケーターに認められるスケーターになること」という彼女がスケーターとして達成したい目標があるからこそである。そしてその夢を叶えるには、いつだってスケートビデオが評価の基準になっていく。彼女のフルパートは、きっと近い将来見ることができるだろう。

It seems like Sayaka has been getting enough spotlights for herself, but why does she want to have her skate part? She answers to the question, it’s a dream that she wants to be a skater ,whom skaters would be like “Oh yeah she fucking shreds!”. And it’s always gonna be judged by skate videos. She’s hoping to have her full skate part one day.

10月10日（祝月）に渋谷・不眠遊戯ライオンにてSayakaさんの初パートを含めたスケート試写会が行われる。Instagramでは見ることのできない “スケーター” としての彼女の作品は必見だ。

Sayaka’s first video part will be shown at Music bar Lion in Shibuya. It’d be an epic night!

今では身近な存在となったスケートショップ。

Skateshop is something you can find in your neighborhood nowadays.

いつでもどこでもスケートボードを買える環境にまで至ったのは、つい最近のことだ。現在、スケートボードを取り扱うスポーツ用品店／スケートショップは、全国におよそ400店舗にまで増えている。2021年に行われた東京オリンピックで正式種目として初登場を果たしたことや、ひとりでも楽しめる遊びとしてコロナ渦で人気を集めたことによって、スケートの需要は大きな変化を遂げた。実は、日本では1960年代の頃からサーファーたちを中心にスケートは普及していた。そして1980年代から1990年代にかけて、若者の間でブームとなった。日本でスケートが流通しはじめてから今までにさまざまな変化を遂げているが、それを知る人は少ない。

When you need a skate gear, there’re a lot of options you can choose from: your favorite skate shops, franchise skate shops, or online. In Japan, there are currently about 400 shops that sell skate gears. The two big reasons why Skateboarding became popular here are because of the olympics and the covid-19. In fact, it has been almost 80 years since skateboarding arrived in Japan, and not many people know the history of it.

今回は、中学生の頃から40年近くスケートを続けているスケートショップ・FABRICオーナーのHideyaさんが、これまでの横浜のスケート環境についてや、さまざまなエピソードを語ってくれた。
