いつでもどこでもスケートボードを買える環境にまで至ったのは、つい最近のことだ。現在、スケートボードを取り扱うスポーツ用品店／スケートショップは、全国におよそ400店舗にまで増えている。2021年に行われた東京オリンピックで正式種目として初登場を果たしたことや、ひとりでも楽しめる遊びとしてコロナ渦で人気を集めたことによって、スケートの需要は大きな変化を遂げた。実は、日本では1960年代の頃からサーファーたちを中心にスケートは普及していた。そして1980年代から1990年代にかけて、若者の間でブームとなった。日本でスケートが流通しはじめてから今までにさまざまな変化を遂げているが、それを知る人は少ない。
When you need a skate gear, there’re a lot of options you can choose from: your favorite skate shops, franchise skate shops, or online. In Japan, there are currently about 400 shops that sell skate gears. The two big reasons why Skateboarding became popular here are because of the olympics and the covid-19. In fact, it has been almost 80 years since skateboarding arrived in Japan, and not many people know the history of it.
今回は、中学生の頃から40年近くスケートを続けているスケートショップ・FABRICオーナーのHideyaさんが、これまでの横浜のスケート環境についてや、さまざまなエピソードを語ってくれた。
For this article, a skate shop owner, Hideya who has been skating for almost 40 years, talks about the skate scene’s history in Yokohama.
スケートボードとの出会い
Beginning of Skate Life
Hideyaさんがスケートボードに心を奪われたのは幼稚園に通っていた頃。世はローラースケートブームであったため、さまざまな場所にローラースケートパークが作られていた。当時、渋谷の東急文化会館の屋上にあったパークの横にはスケート用のハーフパイプも一緒に常設されていたのだ。ボウルになっている部分でカービングやグラインド、エアーを飛んでいるスケーターを見たHideyaさんはとても衝撃を受けたと話す。すぐにその場で両親にスケートボードをおねだりするが、買ってもらうこはできなかった。それも当時は1ドル360円の世界で、スケートボードは1台5万円ほどで流通していた。スケートボードが欲しくてたまらなかったが、スケートボードの写真がプリントされている筆箱でしばらく我慢をした。金髪の白人女性がプールをロールインしている瞬間の写真だった。Hideyaさんは授業中にこの筆箱をただひたすら眺めて過ごした。
Hideya first saw skateboarding when he was in kindergarten. While roller skating was a huge boom, many rinks were built in Japan. On the rooftop of a shopping mall in Shibuya, they had a roller skating rink and a halfpipe right next to it. Hideya was amazed by the people who were curving, grinding, and flying in the air, and he had to ask his parents for a skateboard right at that moment. But they said no, because a skateboard cost over ¥50,000 and it was simply an impossible wish. Instead, he got a pencil case with a picture of a blonde woman rolling into a bowl, and that’s the most he could get at the time.
その後、東京から横浜に引っ越したときに、横浜のスケートボードブームについて取り上げている記事を見つけた母親は、
「ずっとスケートボードやりたいって言ってるし、買ってきてあげたら」
と父親に話した。Hideyaさんは、ついにスケートができる！とわくわくしながら父親の帰りを待っていた矢先、父親が手に持っていたのはローラースケートだった。スケートボードを買える店がほとんどないため、探すことを諦めた父親は、仕方なくローラースケートを買って帰ってきのだと思われる。がっかりしたHideyaさんは、それでもスケートを手に入れる日をずっと夢見ていた。
Aother chance came when his family moved to Yokohama. His mother was reading an article in the newspaper about skateboarding, and she asked her husband
“Hideya always talks about getting a skateboard, why don’t you buy him one?”
When Hideya heard their conversation, he couldn’t be more excited. It must’ve felt like a really long time, waiting for his father to come home with a brand new skateboard. And finally when he came home, what he had in his hands didn’t look like a skateboard. They were actually roller skate shoes, and Hideya got really disappointed. It wasn’t easy to find a skateboard in any shops yet, so he gave up and picked the roller skating shoes.
Hideyaさんが中学3年生のとき、テレビではアメリカのSF映画『Back to the Future』のメイキング映像などが放送されていた。それを見ていたHideyaさんは、主人公がスケートで高校に通っている姿に惹かれ、スケートボードを自分で買うために今まで貯めていたお年玉を全部引き出した。それからついに、はじめてのスケートボードを手に入れることに成功した。
A popular American science fiction film “Back to the Future” was playing at the theaters when Hideya was in the 9th grade. While watching behind the scenes on TV, he saw the main character commuting high school by skateboarding. Instantly he thought that he wanted to become a high school student like him, and decided to buy his own skateboard with all the money he had saved all his life. After a decade, his dream of having a skateboard finally came true.
近所のお兄ちゃんが持っていたスケートボードに乗ったことはあったため、プッシュは余裕でこなした。初めて買ったスケートのハウツー本には、バーチカルの滑り方やキックターンなどが載っていたが、オーリーについては書かれていなかった。基本的に写真から動きを想像しなければならなかったのだ。アメリカの大会やスケートビデオを見るためにデパートに通ったこともあった。ビデオをこっそりダビングして渡してくれる優しい販売員も。しかし当時のスケートは、バーチカルでエアーを飛ぶようなトリックばかり。そのような技ができる場所は横浜になかったのであまり参考にならなかった。それからストリートの大会ができて、Mark GonzalesやSteve Caballero、Aaron Murrayを見て、散々スラッピーとウォール、ストリートプラントとか、ボンレスばっかりやっていたと話す。当時5、6歳ほど上のスケーターにオーリーやf/s180などを教えてもらったりもしたが、自分で探りながら学んでいくのがほとんどとなった。スケートパークはないので、Hideyaさんはひたすらストリートで滑り尽くした。近所のお兄さんが作ったジャンプランプでアールを滑ることもあったとか。しかしすぐボロボロになってしまうため、1ヶ月滑ってみんなで焚き火をしてというのを繰り返していたそうだ。
Hideya has ridden a skateboard before, so pushing was a piece of cake. Then he bought a how-to book, but it wasn’t really helpful because all they talked about was advice on how to skate a vertical ramp, which didn’t exist in Yokohama. It was required to use your imagination to learn how to skate only from photos. And Hideya started going to the department store where he got his skateboard to watch a lot of skate videos. The shop staff was very kind and sometimes made copies for him. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, street skateboarding evolved as a new force to skateboarding. Hideya enjoyed learning slappy grinds, wall rides, and boneless tricks, watching Mark Gonzales, Steve Caballero and Aaron Murray. Also he had skater friends teach him ollies and 180s. In Spite of all the help, learning skate tricks was his own journey. Because there was no such thing as a skate park, skating street was the only way. Some skaters made DIY jump ramps, but they could only last for a month or two.
今では誰もが持っているスマートフォンで自撮りをして自分の動きを確認しながら技の習得ができるが、当時は高島屋のウィンドウを鏡代わりに利用して練習をしていたそう。はじめてビデオに映した自分のスケートを見たのはスケートに乗りはじめてから5、6年経った頃だった。ちょうど今新横のパークがあるところは以前野原で、そこの道路でb/sグラブやGターン、バリアルプラントを撮影した。当時最先端だったのがオーリーでノーズグラブだった。あとは坂道降りたり、オーリーで段差登ったりとか。初めて自分を動画撮影した時の衝撃は本当にその時代でしか味わえない感覚だ。
Everybody can check their moves with smartphones these days, but there wasn’t even a cellphone back in the day. Hideya used to practice in front of a building window. The first time he saw the video of him skating was after 5 to 6 years since he started into skating. His friends recorded him doing B/S grab, G turn and varial plant. Hideya says that he can never forget the feeling when he first saw himself in the videos.
昭和を生きるスケーター
Living the Showa Era
スケートが上手くなければ認められなかったという時代に、Hideyaさんは毎日スケートに乗っていた。その頃の先輩は鬼のハードコアだったが、実際にとても上手かった。雑誌に出ているスケーターを見かけて「問屋の桜」と呼ぶ先輩もいた。ひがみも含まれてはいるが、実際に横浜駅のローカルの人たちはスケートが上手かった。一緒にその人たちとセッションできるようなレベルじゃなかったら、認めてもらうことはできなかったのだ。当時は “チルスケ（のんびりスケート）” は許されなかった。スポットに行って100％全力で滑ってなかったら「お前帰れ！」と真顔で怒鳴られるのが当たり前だったそう。そんな熱意のもったローカルスケーターと遊ぶために毎日スケートしていた。
You had to be a good skater to survive in the 90s. Hideya skated every single day during those times. All his senpai skaters were terrifying, but also very good at skating. Wherever you skated, you had to skate with your 100% energy so that you don’t get kicked out of the skate spots.
1980年代の横浜には暴走族が多かった。Hideyaさんも先輩のつながりで遊びに行ったりすることもあったそうだが、遅刻癖などがあったためよく怒られたと話す。集団で行動することが多い暴走族の動き方に比べ、スケーターはとても自由だ。自分のタイミングでスポットに行けば、気づいたらみんなが集まっている。携帯電話もなかったため、口約束で「また滑ろう」と言うだけで勝手に集まることができた。
Motorcycle gangs were popular in the 80s as well. Hideya had some friends, but couldn’t really follow the gang’s rules; such as being on time. Because most of the skaters were living more freely, he got more into the skate life. You never have to worry about not being on time, or even not showing up. But he loved skating so much that he always showed up anyway to skate with friends.
スケーター狩りというのも実はあったそうだ。元々スケートボードは “不良の遊び” というイメージもあるように、スケーターのなかにはヤンキーや武闘派な人も多くいた。そういった人たちが仲間以外のヤンキーに手を出すと、その後仕返しに他のスケーターを潰しに来ることもあった。スケーターの間では「あそこの公園行くとヤンキーにぶっ飛ばされるよ。」という会話もあったほど。スケーターもヤンキーも気持ちがこもっていたと記憶をたどりながら話してくれたHideyaさん。一緒に滑っていたスケーターも、ヤンキーの先輩も、前歯のない高校生も。スケーターだけでなく、ヤンキーも含めて “昭和のストリート” を築き上げたのであった。
For some period of time, “skater hunt’ existed. Skateboarding used to be seen as a bad boy’s hobby (some people still think it is), and part of it was true: Few people belonged to some gang and any sort of violence group. When a skater punched a non-skater dude at a skate spot, they came back with more people the next day. There were rumors that you might pick a fight at parks while skating. Not only skaters were living the street life in the Showa era.

スケートが1番のみどころであるスケートビデオだが、それだけではない。使用されている音楽も大きな見どころである。デスメタルやヒップホップが流行りはじめた頃は、Billboardで人気の音楽以外の多くを知る機会でもあった。グラフィティもスケートカルチャーと深く関わりをもっているし、スケーターはそういったカルチャーの最先端をいっていた。今では誰もがしている “腰パン” は、元々スケーター独自のファッションスタイルであった。
Skate videos are very inspiring. They always got good music selections. If you watch skate videos, you get to know the music that’s not on Billboard and not many people know. Death Metal and Hip Hop were becoming popular at the time. Graffiti has a strong connection with skateboarding as well. One of the famous fashion styles “Sagging” came from skaters, for instance.
生き返り続けてメジャーとなったスケートボード
How Skateboarding Became Major
これまでにスケートのブームというものは何回も訪れていた。しかし、それが定着するまでにどれほどの時間がかかったことか。スケートは一時的に流行ったヨーヨーやアメリカンクラッカーと同じレベルで、盛り上がるのは一瞬だが、ブームが過ぎれば誰も興味をもたないようなものだった。スケートパークを作り、閉鎖しを繰り返していたのだ。しかし、パークもない時代にスケートをはじめた人にとってストリートカルチャーのいいスタート地点となった。80年代のパートライダーがみんな首になり、パークで滑れなくなる。そういった時にストリートが爆発し、再びパークが増えた。1985年にスケートをはじめたHideyaさんはまさか地元でプールコーピングでグラインドができるようになるなんて、当時の自分は思っても見なかったことだと語る。今こうして無料で利用できる公共のスケートパークがいくつも存在していることはとてもありがたいこと。
For the past years, skateboarding had booms numerous times. Skateparks kept being built, and destroyed each time. In the 80s and 90s, it was a good start to develop the street skating culture without having skateparks anywhere. After a short time, they had to make skate parks because the number of street skaters was overflowing. Hideya had never imagined skating and grinding a pool in his hometown, Yokohama. It is grateful to have public skateparks and skate for free all over Japan, he says.
FABRICのはじまり

これまで自身の経験から、スケートボードを気軽に買える場所が少ないことを不満に感じていたHideyaさん。横浜の街でずっとスケートは続けていたが、駅周辺にはスケート用品を取り扱う店がなかった。「ずっとスケートをしていたい」という夢を叶えるために見つけ出した答えは、自ら横浜にスケートショップをオープンすることだった。
As you’ve read Hideya’s story, he had a very hard time getting a skateboard. Although he continued to skate in Yokohama, there was not a single skate shop in the area. The only wish he had was to skate everyday, and opening a skate shop was the answer to that.
ストリートにしか生息していなかったスケーターにとって情報収集は困難なものだった。どんなにスケートが上手な人でも、本国のスケートブランドとやりとりする術がなかったため、ある程度の年齢になってしまうとスケートを辞めていってしまうことがほとんどだった。そういったスケーターを見てきたHideyaさんは「横浜にもスケーターを（アメリカと）つなぐことができる場所があればいいのに」とずっと考えていた。それからスケートショップである “5nuts” やランプをかまえる “Blaze Pipe” ができた。就職を経て 5nuts で修行した後、横浜駅に新たなスケートショップ “FABRIC” を誕生させたのだ。
Back in the day, talking to other skaters was the only way to hear the skate related news. Though there were so many skaters that could’ve been pros, nobody could connect them with the skate company’s in the United States. Hideya always wished there was a place like that for skaters. Later on, a skate shop called “5nuts” and a skate park called “Blaze Pipe”. He worked at the skate shop for a little while, and opened up his own skate shop “FABRIC”.
肌身離さずいつでも身近にあるものなので、洋服（布）と同じ感覚であることから “FABRIC” を店名として選んだ。口だけや真似するだけの者はあっという間に消えていき、リアルな者だけが生き残れることをスケートから学んだHideyaさんは ”Keep it real!” を掲げ、場所作りに努めている。今年でオープン18年目に突入したFABRICは、ショップライダーや地元のスケーターに支えられながらいくつもの困難を乗り越えてきた。
For those people who love skateboarding, skateboards are similar to clothes (fabric) they wear everyday. Hideya holds “Keep it real!” for his skate shop, as he learned that people who face the reality can only survive in the world. This year will mark the 18th years of opening FABRIC, and the journey is there to be continued.

最後にHideyaさんは
「スケートのコミュニティは、会社も学校も家族も関係ない、自分個人として100%のスタイルでできる友達の集まりだ。」
と話す。社会のしがらみから離れられる居場所であり、スケートをすることはひとつのコミュニケーション方法である。さらに、スケートだけに限らないが、やりたいと思ったことは先にやってしまったほうがいいと付け足した。合うか合わないかはやってみないと分からないため、とりあえずやってみることが1番重要なことである。
“The skate community is amazing because it’s the place where you are being recognized as YOU, no strings attached.”
Hideya says so. It’s the completely opposite world of the “society”, and it’s a great tool to communicate with others. And he added that you should always start acting when you have something you want to do on your mind. You never know what’s right and what’s not until you try it.
無料で楽しめる公共のスケートパークや、地元のスケーターを支えるスケートショップが各地にある今の環境は、スケートに対して断つことのない情熱をもった先人たちのおかげである。ぜひ、これまでスケートカルチャーを支えてきた方々にリスペクトと感謝をもって、将来を築いてほしい。
The skate culture that exists in Japan is all thanks to those people who never gave up on love towards skateboarding for the past few decades. Never forget to appreciate the great environment you are in now.
