スイッチが入るタイミングは人それぞれだ。そのなかで “失恋が自分と向き合うチャンスをくれた” という経験をした人は多いはず。相手を振り向かせるために自分を磨こうと努力をしたり、他人に与えていた自分の時間やエネルギーを成長のために費やすようになったり。だれかを愛し、失うことは人生において大切なことである。
そんなことを気づかせてくれたのは、タイ・バンコクでバーを併設したAirbnbを彼女と共に営んでいるPixieさんだ。
When do you feel motivated?
It could be when you’re hopeful and happy.
It could be when you’re sad after making a mistake.
The feelings or events that make you grow are different for everybody. Among all, having a heart broken is a popular one for sure: It makes you want to become a better person. Losing someone or something definitely needs to happen for growth, and you cannot avoid it.
For this article, Pixie, who runs a bar and airbnb in Bangkok, Thailand with his girlfriend, talks about what he has learned from his many heart broken experiences.
オーナーであるPixieさんは、元々ホステルの経営をしながら写真家としても活動していた。海外旅行も好きで、NYに長期滞在していた過去も。人と会話をすることが好きだと気づいた彼は、ホステルで交わす会話に物足りなさを感じはじめ、2015年にバーをオープンさせた。撮影や長期旅行で忙しい時期もあったため、オープン当初は不定期に運営していたそうだ。しかし、コロナの流行をきっかけに本格的にバー経営に専念する。外出禁止を強いられていた時期に、友人がお酒を楽しめる場所として提供をはじめた。シンハ―はもちろん、色とりどりのカクテルだけでなく、熱々のコンフォート・フードも魅力。ウェスタンな雰囲気が印象的なバーには、Pixieさんが子どもの頃から集めているというビデオテープやDVDを中心に面白いアイテムが見られる。気になるバーの名前である “Trailer Trash Blue Eyes” には、「最悪で美しい」という意味が込められている。直訳すると “ジャンキーが住んでいるトレーラー” に “美しい青い目” であり、どちらも対称的だ。「だれも完璧な人はいない」といったその美しさを表現している。
Pixie used to run a hostel by himself and also work as a photographer. He always knew that he loved to talk with people, and the conversations he was having at the hostel became not enough for him; he wanted to have deeper talks. In 2015, his little wish led him to open up a bar. It didn’t open regularly because he had to travel a lot at the time until the covid became a thing. Since the declaration of a state of emergency was announced, running the bar has been his main focus, and it is open almost everyday. Of course they serve sinha, nice cocktails, and even homemade comfort food. The bar itself got the western vibe inspired by the movies Pixie likes, and decorated with his collection all over the place. If you’re wondering, the bar is called “Trailer Trash Blue Eyes” and it basically means “fucked up beautiful” telling that nobody’s perfect, but that is the beauty.
美味しいお酒と料理を堪能したあとは、バーの真横にあるAirbnbで宿泊することも可能だ。その名も “Seeking Friends for the End of the Earth” 。世界の終わりに唯一残るシェルターのような場所であることを表している。こちらは、もともとホステルの運営が夢だったと話す彼女のNiceさんが担当。バー同様、部屋の内装には映画のポスターが多く飾られている。子どもの頃に見た『トイ・ストーリー』をきっかけに、サイエンスフィクションやファンタジー映画を中心に魅了されていったという彼女が創る素敵な空間となっている。陽気なPixieさんに比べ、あまり多くを語らないNiceさんは、コミュニケーションがあまり得意ではないと話す。しかし、お互いを助け合えるのがカップルのいいところなのではないか。
After enjoying tasty cocktails and food, or even a movie night they have weekly, you can have a nice sleep at Airbnb right next to the bar. The place is called “Seeking Friends for the End of the Earth”. It’s like where people can come and find friends after the end of the earth. Pixie’s girlfriend, Nice is in charge of the Airbnb business. She’s been dreaming about running a hostel for a while. “Toy Story” made her fall in love with movies like SF and fantasy. Likewise the bar, there are movie posters and photos up on the wall. Talking to people isn’t her strongest suit, but obviously Pixie can be little help there.
パートナーという存在は、愛に溢れていて心強い。しかし、時間の流れとともに関係を継続させていくには、お互いの価値観をすり合わせることが必要だ。今感じている最大限の幸せを継続させるには、カップルとしてゆるやかな成長を求めることが不可欠なのかもしれない。好きな人と過ごす時間に満足していると話すPixieさんは、安定した幸せがあるからこそ相手に与えることができるとも言う。バーに来てくれるお客さんの悩みを聞いたり、相談を受けたり。その反面、アーティスト活動は絶賛停滞中だ。これまでたくさん恋をし傷ついてきたという彼は、失恋の後はいつも心の痛みを誤魔化すかのように、新しいことを生み出すことに必死だったそう。「多くの名曲は失った悲しみから生まれる」ように、なにかを失うことは次のステップに向かうにあたって大切なプロセスである。これは恋愛だけでなく、家族や仕事などすべてに当てはまるだろう。
Having a partner does a great thing with love, but it is hard to maintain the relationship with time passing. Either of them or both need to work on compromising to stay happy together. Though, the love you feel becomes double. On this topic, Pixie is very happy with the life he’s having with Nice, and he’s willing to share the happiness with people that come to his bar. On the other hand, he sees himself struggling creating art during the past few years he’s in a relationship. Every time he got his heart broken, that was when he felt motivated to work on photography. In fact, many masterpieces were born from sadness and loss. Losing something is one of the important steps to go forward in life.
