なにかひとつを極める能力というものは素晴らしい。人間がまだ想像したこともないレベルまで物事を突き詰め、進化していく。例えば、プロフェッショナルのスポーツ選手や職人などは、長年の時間と努力を積み重ねて結果を残しており、そんな方たちが大きく評価されやすい世の中ではある。しかし、全員が努力によってどんな夢も叶えられるかと聞かれるとそうではない。生まれた場所や日にちによって分けられている12星座でいうと、やぎ座やおうし座の人は、はじめたことをやり抜くタイプが多く見られる。それとは反対に、いろいろな分野に興味をもち、広い視野で知識を身につけることが得意な人だっている。多様性が求められるのは性別や人種などの目に見える部分だけでなく、それ以上にひとりの人間として大切なパーソナリティにも求められるのである。自分の性質を理解し、どのような生き方が合っているのかを知ることによって、みんなの人生が少し明るくなるはずだろう。自分らしさを受け入れたうえで将来の夢に向かって進んでいけば、きっと上手くいく。
Not many people can pursue one thing all their life and become successful. Those that can, make a history and contribute to the future. Their energy is only focused on one thing at a time, so that it will be quicker to achieve it. Though it is hard to do so for some people. According to astrology, Aries and Capricorn seem to be good at sticking with what they decide to accomplish. On the other hand, some people can naturally develop interests in different areas. You don’t have to look for one thing you can be good at, because you might not be born for it. It’s okay to wok on multiple things at a time too because that could create a new thing or thought. Not only respecting difference in colors of skin or sex, but more importantly accepting different types of personalities is also about diversity. Knowing who you are as a person will help you make decisions easier.
今回は、新しいかたちで美容室を営むスケーターのHiromuさんに話を伺った。好きな仕事と趣味の両立ができている彼が、大切にしていることとはなにか。そして、美容の仕事に就いてからはじめた趣味のスケートボードは、彼の人生にどう影響しているのかを聞いた。
Hiromu is a skater who runs his hair salon & store in Harajuku. For this article, he talked about how he manages work and skateboarding, and how skateboarding has affected his life.
Hiromuさんは東京都出身の34歳（2022年3月時点）。およそ10年間の美容師経験を経て、原宿に夢であったヘアサロン＆ショップ、”Pocky” を2020年の冬にオープンさせた。ここではヘアの施術が行えることはもちろん、Hiromuさんがセレクトした古着やスケートボードのデッキなども購入することができる。果たしてどういった経緯でこのようなお店を開くことになったのだろうか。
Hiromu is now a 34 year old from Tokyo. He has been a hair stylist for about a decade and has become an owner of a Hairsalon & Shop called Pocky since 2020. The place makes it possible for him to do people’s hair and to sell selected vintage clothing and skateboard stuff all together. For now, Hiromu is satisfied with the lifestyle. How did he come this far?
幼少期から体を動かすことが好きで、小中高と野球を続けていたHiromuさんが「野球で生活していくのは無理だろう」と将来を考えたときに選んだ道が美容師だったそうだ。図工や美術の授業が好きで、髪型をデザインして自らの手で表現できるという仕事に魅力を感じたと話す。子供の頃から服が好きで、中学校に入ると髪型もおしゃれにしたいと雑誌を読むようになった。高校生になってからは、掲載されている美容室を訪れることを目標に、アルバイトをしてお金を貯めた。お願いした写真とそのまま同じ髪型の自分を見て感動したときのことが今でも忘れられないという。このときの体験が、美容師への道を大きく開いた。
Hiromu was an active kid; he spent his youth playing baseball. But, he started thinking that it is most likely unrealistic to make a living as a professional baseball player. And becoming a hairstylist was something that came up in his mind. In school, he didn’t like studying, but loved art and crafts. And Hiromu thought doing people’s hair would be one way to show his creation and to make money. He has always been a fashion nerd, and reading magazines gave him the idea. When Hiromu moved up to high school, he saved up money to go to a fancy hair salon in Harajuku and to get his hair done. He was very impressed that the hairstylist gave him the exact haircut he wanted. This experience made him more certain about his dream.
美容師が必ず通らなくてはならないのが、専門学校の卒業だ。Hiromuさんは卒業とともに就職せず、1年間は表参道周辺のカフェでバイトをしながら一人暮らしの資金を貯めることに時間をあてた。しばらくして貯金も順調に進み、就職先の美容院も決まった。第1希望のお店ではなかったが、ひとまず美容師のキャリアをスタート。そしてその後すぐに転職を決め、新しい場所でアシスタントからスタイリストになるまでを過ごした。5年の間で可能な限り技術は全部身につけたが、自由人であるHiromuさんが自分と美容院のスタイルがマッチしないと感じたため、 フリーランスサロンに入社を決めた。1年目は会社雇用で働きながらお客さんを増やし、その後はフリーランスに切り替えた。そして現在は、オーナーとしてひとりでお店を営業しながら自由に活動している。
It is required to graduate from a beauty school to get licensed as a hairstylist. After finishing up school, Hiromu worked at a cafe for a year, saving up to get his own place somewhere close to Harajuku. Then he first started working as a hairstylist. The hair salon wasn’t where he wanted to work at, but he needed to start a career, which made it easier to switch to a better workplace. As soon as later, he found a hair salon where he could grow. He became a top stylist from an assistant within 5 years there. It could’ve been easy to stay at the salon, but Hiromu wasn’t 100% happy with where he was at, because the style of the salon didn’t perfectly match with him. Eventually he left, and decided to work as a freelancer. And now, he runs his own hair salon, where he can fully display his style.
スケートボードはHiromuさんが美容師になってからできた趣味だという。Hiromuさんにとって師匠的存在の方にずっと誘われてはいたが、美容師の安い給料では高額なスケートボードを買えなかったため、はじめたい気持ちだけが日に日につもっていった。ある日、実家に帰った時に家の前のゴミ捨て場に捨てられていたスケートボードを偶然見つけた。まるでHiromuさんを呼びかけているかのように見えたそう。そんな運命的な出会いを果たしたスケートボードを持ち帰る以外の選択肢はなかった。そして拾ったスケートボードを手にして師匠の元で修行に挑み、初めて連れられたのは駒沢公園。板の上に乗ることは問題なくクリアし、初日からランプでのドロップインができるぐらいになったそう。新しいものに挑戦する感覚がとても楽しく、何回転んでもはまっていく一方だった。
Skateboarding was something Hiromu started getting into after he became a hairstylist. He had been interested in it for a while but it was never easy for him to pay for a brand new skateboard. But one day, he got lucky and picked up a skateboard from a dumpster in front of his parents’ house. It was clearly a sign for him to start a skate life, so he brought it home. Within the next few days, Hiromu went to Komazawa Olympic park with his skater friend. Riding a skateboard was a piece of cake for him: he was even able to drop in at the ramp. “It was so much fun trying new things every time.” says Hiromu.

基本的に週に1日の休みだったため、休みの日は駒沢公園でオープンの朝10時から夕方のクローズまでみっちり滑っていた。美容師としてのキャリアを積むうえで、先輩には休みの日も練習や勉強にあてるべきだと言われていたが、Hiromuさんは自分の好きなことも同時に優先させた。美容室の営業後に夜中の2時まで残って練習したり、営業前の早朝に練習したりと時間の使い方を自分なりに工夫したとか。もともとショートスリーパーということもあって、睡眠時間を最低限に抑えて仕事と趣味の両立を目指した。
Hiromu only had a day off once a week, and usually skated all day long on his days off. There were some colleagues that encouraged him to work on his hairstyling skills outside work, but he always made the time to skate. Instead, he stayed at the hair salon until late at night, or came in early in the morning for practice. It wasn’t that hard for him to shorten his hours of sleep because of his childhood as a baseball player that always had morning practices. Hiromu managed to develop both his career and life as a skater very well.
Hiromuさんは、絶対にかかる＆とれない *外国人風スパイラルパーマを看板メニューとしている。一度パーマをあてれば半年から1年ほど保つことができ、ブリーチで痛みすぎていなければかからないことはないという。Hiromuさんの手にかかれば、どんな髪質でも理想以上の仕上がりが期待できるはず。いつも来ていたお客さんが「ブリーチして髪は傷んでるけどくるくるパーマにしたい」と言ったのがはじまりだった。少し不安だったが意外と綺麗にパーマがかかったので、もっと健康状態の良い髪ならもっと簡単にできると思い、技術向上に励んだ。フリーランス前に勤めていた美容室のオーナーがパーマを得意とする方だったため、技術はしっかりと教わっていた。当時は外国人風スパイラルパーマの需要が少なかったが、今後ブームがくるのではと予測したHiromuさんは、自分が得意とするパーマを武器に勝負しようと決めた。そして、Hiromuさんが尊敬するスケーターである Cody Lockwoodの地毛がウェーブのかかったロングヘアだったこともあり、自分も髪を伸ばしてパーマをかけて彼のような見た目になりたかったことも関係している。

While Hiromu was getting hooked on skateboarding, he dreamed about visiting the United States. He hoped for a day when he gets to skate with his favorite skater at his local park in Portland. About 6 years ago in 2014, he finally made it there, and since then he goes back every so often. Hiromu saw the local skaters live, work and skate so freely, and it made a huge impact on how he wants to live life. And the answer was to open up a hair salon & store called “Pocky”. It is such a perfect lifestyle: Hiromu can work whenever he wants and skate whenever he wants. The name “Pocky” was taken from the dog Hiromu had when he was a kid. He says that it is nice to hear people calling its name again. It seems like the store itself symbolizes the life of Hiromu in a way. You can get your hair done by him, but not only that, you can also buy selected vintage clothing and skateboard items at the shop. Hiromu selects vintage clothes only from 70s’ or older, because the clothes that are made earlier are mostly mass produced. Hiromu handles Bacon Skateboards and The Portland Wheel Company through for his store.
美容師になってお店をもつまでに成長したHiromuさんは、感覚を大事にして生きていると話す。好きなことを職業にするだけでなく、自分が感じたことを尊重して転職したりと働き方も工夫してきた。美容師の場合、もちろん数を重ねれば手際も良くなるし、こう切ればだいたいこんな仕上がりになるだろうと想像しながら施術ができるようになる。お客さんの髪質や頭の形が十人十色だからこそ、今までの経験を活かしてそれぞれに合ったスタイルで対応することができるのだ。その体験は、まるで初めて行くストリートスポットで得意技を1発メイクするのと似ているかもしれない。感覚を大事にするということは、自分が感じるものを信じること。つまり自分を信じることに繋がっているだろう。
Lastly, Hiromu said he always attempts to follow what he feels. He was very conscious about what makes him happy as important as building his career. Gaining skills will make you more confident, and you could get flexible in your profession. Because of the experiences Hiromu has, he knows how to make each person’s hair look the best. Nobody has the same head shape and hair type, so this is the skill. It may be similar to street skating, in that you will need to be present and show what you can with a try or two at new spots. Trusting your gut and what you’ve worked for is such a beautiful skill. If you can do that, that means you believe in yourself too.
